Technical Specifications

CuffA fabric sleeve containing an internal, inflatable rubber bag (bladder) that is wrapped around the upper arm.
Inflation BulbA manually operated rubber pump used to inflate the cuff with air.
ValveA screw-type mechanism that controls the gradual release of air from the cuff.
ManometerThe pressure-measuring unit, which can be a mercury column (mercury sphygmomanometer, considered the "gold standard" for accuracy but less common due to toxicity concerns) or a calibrated clock-style dial gauge (aneroid sphygmomanometer).
StethoscopeUsed in manual (auscultatory) measurements to listen for the specific sounds of blood flow (known as Korotkoff sounds) in the brachial artery as the cuff deflates.
AuscultationThe process of listening to internal body sounds (in this case, arterial blood flow sounds) with a stethoscope.
Brachial ArteryThe major artery in the upper arm where the cuff is placed and sounds are auscultated.
Systolic PressureThe pressure exerted against the artery walls when the heart beats (the first sound heard during deflation).
Diastolic PressureThe pressure in the arteries between heartbeats (when the sounds disappear during deflation).
mmHg (millimeters of mercury)The standard unit of measurement for blood pressure readings.
Hypertension/HypotensionMedical terms for high and low blood pressure, respectively, which are conditions monitored using the device.
